Vacancy: Trustee

  • Unpaid volunteer position

Friends of Scottish Settlers (FOSS) is seeking to appoint additional Trustees. This is an exciting opportunity for people, with or without previous Trustee experience, who would like to help drive forward our work in making Falkirk a welcoming haven for newcomers. We are intent on building real diversity of backgrounds, interests and experience in the makeup of our Board of Trustees.

FOSS is a volunteer organisation offering holistic support through the provision of material needs, befriending and other activities to newcomers of many nationalities and with wide-ranging needs, including refugees and people in the asylum system. FOSS has grown rapidly and is a dynamic organisation. Those who depend on our support are often in very difficult circumstances. People placed in Falkirk face additional challenges because our area is only beginning to establish refugee-informed assistance. FOSS is at the forefront of building these local ecosystems of support.

Our services are delivered by an excellent team of four part-time staff and around 30 dedicated volunteers. Trustees are volunteers expected to serve for three years, extendable to six years. They are responsible for the governance of the charity, helping to ensure that we achieve our objectives and make proper use of the grants
and donations on which we depend. New Trustees receive a full induction and have access to relevant training and support from an experienced Board of Trustees.

This role is for you if:

  • You are committed to supporting newcomers to the Falkirk District and to the FOSS values of empowerment, solidarity, respect, integrity and welcome.
  • You can listen and communicate well, showing tact and diplomacy.
  • You are dependable and able to follow through on your commitments.
  • You are patient and willing to help while also being honest about your own limits.
  • You can maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately.

Board meetings are held every six weeks on a Monday evening in Falkirk. Where appropriate, Trustees can join online. Reasonable travel expenses are reimbursable.
